Sophisticated hackers suspected to be from China may have been behind a 2018 attack on the Australian National University's internal records network that saw students' details sent offshore.

A series of operations were then conducted on an older server built into the ANU network that gave the hackers access to all of the university's information – including student records that were sent overseas while the digital trail left behind by the hack was erased.
