China’s foreign ministry has returned serve at the federal government, warning it must not intervene in the Asian powerhouse's espionage case against an Australian writer.

China has expressed"strong dissatisfaction" over an Australian government statement about a Chinese Australian writer who's been formally arrested in China on suspicion of espionage.

China's foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at Tuesday's regular news conference that Dr Yang is in good health and his rights are guaranteed. “We’d obviously be disturbed by that if it was the allegation, because there is absolutely no foundation for it at all.”“He’s a blogger and that’s what he does, he’s an academic, he’s of a different ilk,” Mr Stary said.

Foreign Minister Marise Payne has expressed concerns about Dr Yang's detention with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.“We have serious concerns for Dr Yang’s welfare and about the conditions under which he is being been held,” Senator Payne said.
