Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi's challenge on Cole Palmer, saying he didn't believe it warranted a red card.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has defended Leicester City midfielder Wilfried Ndidi 's challenge on Cole Palmer , disagreeing with many Chelsea fans who felt it deserved a red card . The incident occurred in the 22nd minute of Saturday's Premier League match at the King Power Stadium. Ndidi went in hard on Palmer, catching the England international on his ankle as he attempted to chase him down.
While the referee, Andy Madley, only awarded a yellow card, many Chelsea supporters felt it should have been a straight red. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Chelsea, with goals from Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez. Despite the controversy, Maresca, who previously coached Ndidi at Leicester, insisted that he did not believe the tackle warranted a red card. 'I don't think Cole is the target. I don't think that,' Maresca said in his post-match interview. 'I'm not saying Wilf was bad intention because I love Wilf. Overall, when there is bad intention, I think the punishment has to be different. He added, 'I don't think so. I saw the clip and I don't think it is a red, to be honest. The other one I said that was a red card, for sure.
