Australia's only floor price on alcohol has been in place for a year. Is it working?

Before the floor price took effect, a Banned Drinker Register prevented some people buying takeaway alcohol and police were stationed outside bottle-shops in Alice Springs, Tennant Creek and Katherine, where there were also various limits on cask wine sales and opening hours.

Across the NT, the researchers reported a significant decrease in the wholesale supply of cask and bottled wine per capita, as well as a "small but significant" increase in fortified wine. But he said the "unique" impact of the floor price on harm reduction measures could be seen from the results in Darwin, where there are no liquor inspectors stationed at bottle-shops.

"We're able to control for the impact of the Banned Drinkers Register and other trends over time, so we are confident that the changes in Darwin are primarily related to the minimum unit price in these models."Professor Miller stressed the research team's findings were preliminary and the full impact of the floor price would become clearer at another evaluation at the three-year mark.
