Increased seismic activity in the Canary Islands has 'heightened concerns about potential volcanic activity'
Residents in the Canary Islands reported feeling tremors after an earthquake rocked Tenerife this week. Spain’s national geographic agency, the Instituo Geografico Nacional , recorded a new earthquake on Monday, October 21, occurring around 3.45pm.
It reached a magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale, and although this isn’t considered high, members of the public could feel the tremors, news site Canarian Weekly reports. The epicentre of the quake was located in the northern part of the island. It's not the first earthquake to be felt in recent weeks. On October 17th a 3.3 magnitude earthquake was reported in the south coast of Gran Canaria. Back in September Gran Canaria was hit by the strongest earthquake in 60 years, with a 3.8 tremor rocking the island on September 10.The shaking was felt in 14 of the island’s 21 municipalities and it was described as the fiercest in six decades. No significant damage was reported.
Regarding the latest earthquake, Canarian Weekly said: “This event adds to the recent series of earthquakes recorded in the Canary Islands, which are under continuous seismic monitoring to better understand the geological dynamics of the archipelago.
According to the IGN, the Canary Islands is “a zone of moderate seismicity, with earthquakes that, in general, do not exceed 5.5 degrees of magnitude”. Earthquakes can be due to volcanic or tectonic plate activity. More than 50 stations monitor the seismic network of the Canary Islands, and transmit data in real time to an automatic analysis and location system.
