Drivers under the platform of e-hailing firms like Uber, Bolt, and InDriver, following the refusal of the companies to implement a significant upward review of fares in light of the new price of gasoline, withdrew their services on Wednesday. EDIDIONG IKPOTO writes on the grievances of the drivers
Olawale also stated that any price review below 200 percent would spell very devastating implications for the e-hailing drivers.
“We shall direct our members across Nigeria from Tuesday to embark on protest and withdraw their services on any app-based transport company that fails to comply fully with our demand.” He also said, “We are also considering the effects of this on our passengers. We have made recommendations to them, and our recommendation after our National Administrative Council meeting was that Bolt should review their price upwards by 200 percent. Also, all the app companies in Nigeria that our members are working with.
“We have written several letters to them, particularly Bolt, Uber, and inDriver before now in which we asked to hold discussions on how we can work together. They did not honour those letters. It will surprise you that because our union was granted approval by the Ministry of Labour and Productivity in January this year, even though we had been in the process for about seven years, Bolt and Uber petitioned the Ministry of Labour that they should declassify that certificate,” Olawale said.
Obinna said, “The ride-hailing companies are the only winners at the end of the day. The Fuel price has gone up by almost three times and they managed to increase the base fare by N100? That’s a joke. What can N100 do?”
