British-based journalist and filmmaker Richard Kerbaj reveals the story of the exclusive five-nation global intelligence alliance.
In the Bond stories, 007 acts as though the British secret service is a global intelligence organisation that does not need help from anyone, except, perhaps, for the occasional assist from the CIA’s Felix Leiter. But the reality, according to Richard Kerbaj, is that Britain is but one member of an extraordinarily long-lasting five-nation global intelligence alliance dominated by the US but which values participation of Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
One of the biggest coups pulled off in the early years of the Five Eyes was the defection in Canberra of Soviet agent Vladimir Petrov in the 1950s, which led to the exposure of Russians spies operating around the world. It was this operation, we’re told, that established Australia as a respected member of the Five Eyes. More recently, Australia sought to persuade other Five Eyes members to exclude Chinese entities from establishing 5G networks.
A complicating factor in any history of national security is the frequently strained relationship between politicians and intelligence officials. According to Kerbaj, a low point in the history of the Five Eyes occurred in the early 1970s, when the pervasive atmosphere of paranoia in national politics arguably influenced the negative attitude of leaders such as Nixon, Heath and Whitlam.

Biden one of the ‘biggest propagators of lies’ in US historyUS President Joe Biden was “pandering” when he said during a recent speech he was “raised in the Puerto Rican community at home, politically”, says comedian Alex Stein. Mr Stein pointed to when Dr Jill Biden also compared Latinos to breakfast tacos. “It’s all projection, it’s all about race, it’s all about sex, it’s all about some sort of affirmative action that they’re trying to appeal to the minorities or the marginalised people,' he told Sky News host Rowan Dean. “It’s all lies, and Joe Biden is one of the biggest propagators of lies in United States history.”
