Since the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), took office on May 29, 2015, his regime has allocated approximately N5.081tn for defence

, including the appropriation of N4.669tn to the Federal Ministry of Defence from 2016 to date and $1bn for the purchase of military equipment.

In 2018, N576.3bn was allocated to the ministry, comprising N418.6bn for recurrent expenditure and N157.7bn for capital expenditure. Additionally, the recently signed 2021 Supplementary Appropriation Act allocated to the ministry a total of N714.5bn. The breakdown listed the Defence Headquarters , Nigerian Army , Nigerian Navy , Nigerian Air Force , and Defence Space Administration .

During the year 2018, N132.7bn was released for the ministry’s capital projects and programmes. For 2019, the ministry received N106.8bn of its allocation, while N121.3bn was released for 2020.With the N575.9bn released to the defence ministry for capital projects and the $1bn released for the purchase of arms, the total defence spending on military equipment, including hardware and fighter jets is approximately N987.6bn.

This came barely a month after the resignation and replacement of the service chiefs, including a former Chief of Defence Staff, Gen Abayomi Olonisakin ; former Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Tukur Buratai ; former Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas ; and former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar .
