Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno warns that the tax reform bills could lead to significant consequences for Nigerians. He argues that the proposed VAT sharing model would disproportionately benefit Lagos and Rivers states.
Babagana Zulum , the governor of Borno, has warned that while President Bola Tinubu can use his executive powers to pass the tax reform bills, there will be significant consequences for millions of Nigeria ns. The governor argues that the proposed value-added tax (VAT) sharing model in the tax reform bills would predominantly benefit Lagos and Rivers states.
On Channels Television’s ‘Politics Today’, Zulum stated that the northern region’s opposition to the tax bills is not an indication of opposition to the Tinubu administration. The four bills under consideration are the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill. The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, 2024, proposes a new VAT sharing model, allocating 10 percent to the federal government, 55 percent to states, and 35 percent to LGAs. Under this proposal, states will use a sharing ratio of 20:20:60, which differs from the current 15 percent for the federal government, 50 percent for states, and 35 percent for LGAs
