Boko Haram/ISWAP Attack Kills 15 Firewood Collectors in Borno, Troops Kill 16 Insurgents in Adamawa

Crime News

Suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists killed 15 villagers collecting firewood in Marte LGA, Borno State, while troops killed 16 insurgents in Adamawa State.

Suspected Boko Haram / ISWAP terrorists killed 15 villagers who had gone into the bush to collect firewood in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State on Thursday, while troops killed 16 insurgents in Adamawa State during a two-day operation. The Borno police confirmed the attack on Friday, and the counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama reported the military operations conducted between September 30 and October 1.

Borno Attack and Police Investigation

Nahum Daso, police spokesperson in Borno, confirmed the attack to TheCable on Friday. He said Nasiru Abdulmajid, commissioner of police in the state, had ordered an investigation into the incident.

Daso said the preliminary report from the divisional police officer indicated that 15 individuals were unfortunately killed by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists. The victims were villagers who had gone into the bush to collect firewood when they were attacked.

The attack occurred in Marte LGA, a region in Borno State that has been repeatedly targeted by insurgents. The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Military Operations in Adamawa State

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region, the operations conducted between September 30 and October 1 covered the Sector 4 area. The operations involved ground ambushes, a precision air strike, and defensive operations against terrorist attacks.

Makama said troops also repelled coordinated attacks by insurgents on the 226 Battalion in Garkida and the 232 Battalion in Garaha. The troops responded with superior firepower, forcing the attackers to abort their mission and withdraw.

Three soldiers were killed during the engagements, according to Makama. Wounded personnel were evacuated and were receiving medical treatment.

Context of Insurgency in Northeast Nigeria

The Boko Haram insurgency began in 2009 and has since spread across northeast Nigeria, causing widespread violence and displacement. In 2015, the group pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, leading to the formation of ISWAP, which has become a dominant faction in the Lake Chad region.

Marte LGA in Borno State has been a hotspot for insurgent activities, with frequent attacks on civilians and military personnel. The region's vast bushland provides cover for insurgents, making it difficult for security forces to fully secure the area.

Adamawa State, south of Borno, has also experienced attacks, though less frequently. The operations in Sector 4 aimed to disrupt insurgent movements and protect civilian populations.

The Nigerian military has been conducting sustained operations against the insurgents, but the group continues to carry out deadly attacks on soft targets, including villagers and travelers. The recent incidents highlight the ongoing security challenges in the region.

Local communities have called for increased military presence and better intelligence to prevent such attacks. The police investigation into the Borno incident is expected to provide more details on the perpetrators and their motives.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly stated its commitment to defeating the insurgency, but the persistence of attacks underscores the complexity of the conflict. International partners have provided support, including training and equipment, to aid the military effort.

As the security situation remains volatile, residents in affected areas continue to face risks in their daily activities. The attack on firewood collectors is a stark reminder of the dangers civilians face in conflict zones.
