Officers searching for Kirk Hutcheon, 53, discovered a body in the Galloway Forest at around 4.45pm on Wednesday.
Police had earlier appealed for information as part of their efforts to trace the dad.
Formal identification is yet to take place following the discovery, but Kirk's heartbroken family have been informed. There are no apparent suspicious circumstances relating to the death. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 4.50pm on Wednesday, November 1, the body of a man was found in the Galloway Forest.
