Without revealing the dates for more flights, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Geoffrey Onyeama recently said they would be staggered due to insufficient isolation facilities in the country. Unfortunately this was not the kind of news that those anxiously awaiting evacuation had wished to hear. The case of more than 300 Nigerian citizens in Guangzhou, China, who have suffered racist attacks and discrimination in the hands of some provincial officials, cannot be swept aside.

The shoddy treatment of Nigerian nationals in China, however, has been traced to a decision by the Guangzhou Municipal Authority to keep all foreigners living in the province in quarantine for 14 days and to test them for COVID-19. However, anyone who overstays his visa for a significant period of time stands the risk of being detained for up to 15 days, repatriated and blacklisted. As a result, he might be prohibited from entering the country for 10 years.

In his reaction, Onyema said the Nigerian Consulate in Guangzhou had been directed to document every case of discrimination and racism against Nigerians for redress. The minister also summoned the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian, twice to explain why Nigerians were being maltreated in his country.
