Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, Charles Hamawa, calls for improved welfare and equipment for Nigerian armed forces, emphasizing the need for adequate resources and independence to combat insecurity.
The Catholic Bishop of Jalingo Diocese, in Taraba State, Charles Hamawa, has called on the Nigerian government to as a matter of urgency prioritize the welfare of the armed forces. The Bishop also called for the proper equipping of the country’s armed forces as it will go a long way to undermine the fight against insecurity.
Speaking on Sunday during an interdenominational church service in Jalingo metropolis held in honor of the fallen heroes, the clergyman emphasized the importance of providing the military with adequate incentives and resources to effectively tackle the nation’s security challenges. He noted that insufficient equipment has hampered the army’s ability to combat insurgents and other threats, adding that the politicization of armed forces' entitlements must cease. “What is meant for the armed forces must always be made available to them,” the bishop declared. Bishop Hamawa urged the government to respect the military and grant them the independence necessary to perform their duties without undue interference. He also appealed to members of the armed forces to uphold integrity and professionalism in their service to the nation. “Do your work consciously, without bias, and don’t compromise your values. Have the courage to say no when necessary,” he advised the troops. On his part, the 6 Brigade Commander, Brigadier Kingsley Uwa, reinforced the bishop’s sentiments, urging soldiers, particularly those serving in Taraba, to remain dedicated to their mission of protecting the nation. “Let us continue to uphold our values as we strive to protect our nation, ”Uwa stated, emphasizing the importance of honor, courage, and selflessness in military service. The commander assured the public that the brigade would continue working closely with sister security agencies to combat criminal activities and secure the region
