Astronomers have discovered a binary star system, D9, orbiting the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A* at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. This unexpected finding challenges previous assumptions about the gravitational forces in this region and opens new possibilities for studying planet formation near black holes.

Sagittarius A* , the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy, is known for being devoid of planets and some kinds of stars. However, a new study published in Nature Communications reveals the surprising discovery of a binary star system, called D9, close to Sagittarius A* . This finding challenges the previous understanding that the gravitational forces around a black hole were too extreme for such a system to survive.

Binary star systems are common, accounting for about a third of the star systems in our Milky Way galaxy. The discovery, made from 15 years of data collected by the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope in Chile, could make it much easier for astronomers to find planets close to Sagittarius A*. Astronomers believe that binary stars close to black holes may only exist briefly in the context of cosmic time. D9 is thought to be a mere 2.7 million years old, a virtual newborn in stellar terms. Its close proximity to Sagittarius A* suggests that it may merge into a single star within a million years, making D9 an extraordinary find
