Kanunta claimed that he had a pact for Kanu's release with the President's son, Seyi Tinubu, in the build-up to the 2023 presidential election. He disclosed that the meeting had the blessing of the President. Kanunta, however, lamented that Tinubu has refused to honour the agreement to release the IPOB leader. The IPOB leader has been incarcerated since 2021 when he was rearrested and forcefully repatriated from Kenya to Nigeria.
