about the plight of primary schoolteachers owed backlog of salaries spanning 13 months by the state government, the impact on their families, and the implication of the on the general electionsThe payment of our salaries is very poor. It is very poor in the sense that this administration cost us our 2017 salaries; we were only paid for two months – January and February. From March 2017, we did not receive any other payment. In December 2021, some teachers were paid and some were not paid.
Some of your members were reported to have resorted to petty trading to survive. Can you paint a clearer picture of how your members are trying to cope? The governor has been complaining but it is not easy for teachers. The state is facing insecurity and when we discovered that many residents were in internally displaced persons’ camps, teachers supported the state government even though we did not get much. I remember well that we helped to feed IDPs. From our meagre salaries, we contributed about N35m and sent it to the IDPs. But we are IDPs; we are suffering too.
