Benin's main opposition on Thursday rejected the results of this week's parliamentary election, claiming vote buying and fraud allowed allies of President Patrice Talon to win a majority of legislature seats.

In this file photo taken on January 08, 2023 members of the observers and the CENA check the number of votes following the legislative elections at the public primary school, Charles Guillot de Zongo in Cotonou. – Benin’s opposition has won 28 seats in a weekend parliamentary election, returning to the 109-seat legislature after a four year absence, according to preliminary results released on January 11, 2023.

Pro-Talon Republican Bloc and Progressive Union for Renewal parties together won 81 seats in the 109-member parliament with opposition Democrats gaining 28 seats, according to preliminary results on Wednesday. “The count attributed to the Siamese parties could only be achieved thanks to the schemes put in place to distort the democratic game.”

Most of Talon’s key opponents have also been jailed or gone into exile after the cotton magnate came to office. Its mandate ends this year and four new judges will be appointed by lawmakers while three are chosen by the president.
