England-based IBF European welterweight champion Larry Ekundayo is passionate about hosting a world title bout in Nigeria. The 26-year-old Nigerian boxer, in this telephone interview with, talks about his experiences in England, state of Nigerian boxing, Anthony Joshua and moreI was actually planning on having a world title fight in Nigeria; that’s the actual plan. That’s my main goal and we are still working on it and it’s going to happen.
Well, if you look at the crowd, the whole population of England, it’s not even near Nigeria, but over here we’ve got world champions everywhere. Put the whole of Africa together, I don’t think they have the number of world champions England has. So, it’s just right for us to start bringing the boxing glory back to Nigeria and Africa. Of course, I’ve got children, they were born here and it’s good for them to know their roots.
In every fight, there is a task, and the task is having a proper preparation. But I was lucky enough to have a good backing, which are my sponsors, the Lord of Christ Church. They gave me everything to really prepare for the fight, which made it a lot easier. The church covered the costs – training camp; you have your strength condition coach; the governing body fees that needed to be paid and everything that was needed for me to get ready.
