BBC Wales presenter Lucy Owen has opened up about having emergency surgery on her right eye that saved her ability to see, saying the ordeal was 'so hard to process'

Lucy Owen, who presents BBC Wales Today, told of how she was rushed for emergency surgery after doctors discovered earlier this year that she had been living with a detached retina. This happens when the retina, a thin layer at the back of the eye, becomes loose.

The 52 year old wrote in her BBC column that she knew something was awry when she began seeing white flashes in her right eye. This resulted in the TV presenter having to be on bed rest and wear an eye patch daily."My mind was racing. It was all so hard to process. If it didn’t work, how would I cope? Would I still be able to work, read the autocue? Faced with the prospect of losing my sight in that eye, suddenly the vision that I’d always taken for granted seemed incredibly precious.

The mum of one had previously written about her ordeal on X, formerly Twitter. In her post, she thanked the NHS professionals who had looked after her, as well as the optician who alerted her about her detached retina. She also urged followers to “keep an eye” on their own vision. "Again I need to say a huge thank you to the NHS. Going home after Mr Williams and the amazing team stopped me losing sight in my eye with surgery for a detached retina.
