A rehabilitation center in Bauchi, Nigeria, has been raided by police following allegations of abuse, sodomy, and exploitation of inmates. The founder of the center, Mallam Kawu, was arrested, and ten children were evacuated from the facility.
Operatives of the Bauchi Police Command, in collaboration with the Hisbah Command of the State Shariah Commission, raided the Mallam Kawu Rehabilitation and Skill Acquisition Center in Yakubu Wanka, Bauchi Local Government Area. The raid resulted in the arrest of the center's founder, Mallam Kawu, on allegations of abuse, sodomy, and exploitation of inmates. Ten children were also evacuated from the facility during the operation.
The center, which primarily housed drug addicts seeking rehabilitation and skill acquisition in areas like carpentry, welding, and computer training, came under scrutiny following a complaint lodged by a former inmate, Yahaya Yusuf. Yusuf alleged that the facility harbored criminals and engaged in acts of sodomy, accusing Mallam Kawu of sexual abuse and claiming to have contracted HIV as a result of sodomy by the founder and visitors. The Hisbah Permanent Commissioner, Aminu Balarabe Isa, briefed journalists about the raid's outcome, stating that children from countries such as Cameroon, Ghana, Niger, and Côte d’Ivoire were brought to the center under the guise of rehabilitation. Isa revealed that before the operation, Mallam Kawu had released many of the inmates, leaving a smaller number of remaining individuals at the center. Details regarding these remaining inmates are being gathered. Bauchi Police Command spokesman, Ahmed Wakil, disclosed that Mallam Kawu had ignored previous invitations for questioning, prompting the raid at the request of the Bauchi State Government. Wakil explained that the police received complaints about the rehabilitation center and initially invited Mallam Kawu for questioning, but he failed to appear and ignored several phone calls. Kawu was subsequently arrested and taken into police custody for questioning, while investigations are ongoing to determine the validity of the allegations against him
