Internally displaced persons, IDPs, in Bakassi Local Government Area in Cross River State have cried out over alleged unfair treatment by the Nigerian soldiers deployed to Ikang Community for “Operation Still Waters,” an allegation denied by military sources.

The Bakassi IDPs, who are mostly fishermen, during a peaceful protest which started from Ikot Effiom Obutong re-settlement camp and ended at Ikang Bakassi fishing port, came out in large numbers to lay bare their frustration over alleged intimidation and harassment by the soldiers.

Among the allegations levelled against the soldiers in Bakassi include the flogging of fishermen for being in possession of petroleum products, which the IDPs claim they use to power their fishing boats. The General Secretary of the Bakassi Internally Displaced Persons resettlement camp, Mr Linus Essien, and spokesman of the protesters said the IDPs were facing hard times as they were prevented by soldiers from buying petrol for their fishing boats.
