B.C. NDP Leader John Horgan maintained his support for Nathan Cullen on Monday, after Cullen came under fire for insensitive comments about a Haida candidate over the weekend.
“He’s not well-liked — he’s Haida — in his own community,” Cullen had said prior to a recent all-candidates meeting. “The guy’s going to get bedrock 20 per cent.”
“We are calling on you today to remove Nathan Cullen as a BC NDP candidate. Anything less will be a further signal of disrespect to Indigenous people in British Columbia, and inconsistent with your stated commitment to reconciliation.” “I’ve not seen the letter from the Gitxsan but I know no one’s going to work harder than Nathan Cullen to make up for his stupid comments.”
“I believe this election is about people and how we make sure that government is there for them every single day. We have significant challenges ahead of us,” said Horgan, adding that he’d also voted in advance earlier in the morning.Article content continued
