KOTA KINABALU: The state government has no right and no plans to issue documents to illegal immigrants in the state, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Azis Jamman reiterated in view of fresh questions about the matter.

He said the state government had been trying to explain to the people that it needed to issue some form of documentation to stateless people who have been residing in Sabah for decades and generations.

“The Parti Warisan Sabah-led state government has never said it wants to issue documents to illegal immigrants, nor have we ever planned to take illegal immigrants as our own,” he said in a statement yesterday. He was responding to Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia chief for Sabah, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, who was heard at an event recently questioning the rationale behind the state government’s move to issue documents to PTI , citing security concerns.Hajiji had also said it was not right or the duty of the state government to issue documents to PTI in Sabah.

“I have to stress that the Sabah government has no power to give citizenship to illegal immigrants, whereas the proposed documentation of stateless people, if it is to proceed, will be managed by the Immigration Department under the Home Ministry,” said Azis.
