Ayokunle Urges Tinubu to Address Hunger and Insecurity in Nigeria
Samson Ayokunle, Bola Tinubu, Nigeria

Former CAN President Rev Samson Ayokunle urges President Bola Tinubu to tackle hunger, insecurity, and inflation, warning that Nigerians are struggling economically.

Former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev Samson Ayokunle, on Friday called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently take decisive action to address the hunger, insecurity, and inflation currently affecting Nigeria. He made the call while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the 10th anniversary of the Oritamefa Baptist Model School Cambridge A’Level College, held at Yemetu in the Ibadan North Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Ayokunle lamented that it was becoming increasingly difficult for Nigerians to survive economically. He urged the President to implement policies that directly alleviate public suffering.

Economic Hardship and Inflation in Nigeria

The cleric stated that while the removal of the petrol subsidy might have been intended as a policy measure, it had compounded economic hardship without sufficient measures to cushion the impact on citizens. He stressed that Nigeria required a determined leadership that was not complicit in security challenges to effectively tackle terrorism, banditry, and other social vices.

Ayokunle questioned the average earning in Nigeria today compared to other oil-producing nations. He noted that the current wages, compounded by the devaluation of the naira, have thrown many into abject poverty.

He said it is very difficult for Nigerians to breathe economically, and a serious government that will not play politics with human lives must address this urgently. He added that the masses are the assessors of leadership, and the truth must be spoken: there is hunger in the land, and the cost of living is too high.

The former CAN President also highlighted that the removal of the subsidy was good, but the lack of adequate palliatives has worsened the situation for ordinary citizens. He called for policies that directly alleviate suffering rather than those that exacerbate it.

Education and Leadership Accountability

Speaking on education, Ayokunle said the feat that the Oritamefa Baptist Church is accomplishing in the field of education is a derivation from the ministry of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. He explained that Baptists are known for three principal ministries: church building, teaching (which has to do with education), and medical provision.

He stated that with more resources available to the government, authorities should perform better in providing quality education. This should be done not only by releasing funds but also by monitoring allocations to ensure they are used for their intended purpose.

Ayokunle urged political leaders to confront the security situation firmly. He said that the moment leaders are no longer complicit in insecurity, Nigerians will breathe a sigh of relief.

He stressed that determined leadership is needed to effectively tackle terrorism, banditry, and other social vices. He also advised youths not to allow environmental constraints to limit their potential.

Youth Potential and Future Outlook

Earlier, the immediate past pastor of Oritamefa Baptist Church, Rev Remi Awopegba, advised Nigerian youths not to allow environmental constraints to limit their potential. He said, Don’t allow your environment to limit you. Start from where you are, because we realised that progress is driven by vision rather than certificates alone.

He recalled that the college started with only 29 students before expanding into a major academic institution designed to groom global scholars. The anniversary event celebrated the institution's growth and its contribution to education.

Regarding the 2027 elections, Ayokunle said that what God revealed to him is that whatever happens to this nation, Nigeria will still survive and His will alone will manifest. He added that anyone who has given up is not supposed to be in this country, but the solution lies in a more determined leadership.

The former CAN President's remarks underscore the urgent need for government action to address the economic and security challenges facing Nigeria. He called on President Tinubu to implement policies that will directly improve the lives of Nigerians and ensure that the country's resources are used for the benefit of all.
