The Federal Government of Nigeria has received a $1 billion loan from the International Development Association (IDA) for healthcare funding. This loan, comprising two $500 million concessional loans and $70 million in grant funding from other international bodies, aims to improve primary healthcare and governance in the country. The funds will be allocated to two main areas: $500 million for governance improvements and another $500 million to enhance primary healthcare.
The governance component will incentivize states to recruit and train teachers and healthcare workers, while the healthcare portion will expand primary healthcare services, improve quality, and boost resilience. In addition to the IDA loan, the Federal Executive Council (FEC) also approved an allocation of N4.5 billion for the procurement of HIV treatment packs to support Nigerians living with HIV/AIDS.Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar expressed concern over the lack of transparency regarding the utilization of the $1 billion loan. He stated that claims of animals such as snakes, termites, gorillas, and monkeys swallowing public funds should never be the fate of funds allocated for the critical health sector. Abubakar emphasized the importance of the government providing extensive details on how the loan would be spent, citing the moral imperative to ensure accountability in the allocation and expenditure of public funds. He argued that Nigerians, burdened by the prospect of repaying the loan, deserved a clear understanding of its intended use and the mechanisms in place to track its disbursement.
