Ogunyemi stated this at a public hearing on “Sexual Harassment of Students in Tertiary Educational Institutions Prohibition Bill,” ASUU SexualHarassment TertiaryInstitutions Nigeria
National President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities Professor Biodun Ogunyemi has canvassed a review of existing laws on sexual harassment, saying such laws should recognise universities autonomy.
The public hearing was organised by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, headed by Bamidele Opeyemi after the bill scaled its second reading on November 6, 2019. He said, “There are laws that would address the menace like the Act of 2015. We should reconcile the bill with that act to cover new areas of concern. Are we also going to formulate a separate law to address corruption in universities? Are we going to formulate other laws to address sexual harassment in the police?
