As health care workers fear possible exposure to COVID-19 through their patients, some Primary Healthcare Centres in Lagos State have refrained from administering routine immunisation on babies, exposing them to childhood killer diseases such as polio, measles and other vaccine-preventable infections. ANGELA ONWUZOO reports
At CMS PHC, Ilaje, Bariga, 32-year-old Mrs. Funmilola Adesina, who brought her six-week-old baby for Oral Polio Vaccine against poliomyelitis, shared her frustration with our Correspondent. “They said even next week, if I don’t come as early as 6Am, I will still not be able to have her vaccinated. Adesina went on, “I narrowly survived her delivery. When labour started by 1:00AM, it was difficult getting to the hospital owing to the lockdown, and because we didn’t have a private car.“I delivered in less than seven minutes that I got to the hospital. You can imagine what could have happened to us if I had delivered at home or on the road.
