If not for the dogged determination of a couple of sharp-eyed canoeists and then a raft of agencies and scientists, a much-loved turtle found only in a single river of northern NSW would be no more.
Efforts to raise the alarm initially failed with the local council. The reptile grows to the size of a dessert plate and is among "butt-breathing" turtles that draw in oxygen from both ends. Dr Karrie Rose from the Australian Registry of Wildlife Health based at Taronga said it was clear a virus was wiping out a population that had numbered about 4200 adults along a 47-kilometre stretch of the rivers."These last 17 animals were scooped out of the last pond before the event swept through," Dr Rose said. “It is really an unprecedented event to have ... the functional extinction of the species in such a short period of time.
