Former Nigerian Minister Rauf Aregbesola and ex-Kano Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso met in Lagos to strategize for the 2027 general election. This meeting follows the recent exit of Aregbesola's political group from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The move suggests a growing trend of political alliances aimed at challenging the APC's dominance in the upcoming elections.
On February 8, 2025, at 8:03 pm, Rauf Aregbesola , the former minister of interior, and Rabiu Kwankwaso , the ex-governor of Kano state, met in Lagos to strategize for the 2027 general election. A party source revealed to TheCable that Aregbesola and Kwankwaso concluded a lengthy meeting in Lagos focused on planning for the 2027 election . This meeting follows the recent departure of Aregbesola 's political group, Omoluabi Progressives, from the All Progressives Congress ( APC ).
Abosede Oluwaseun, the spokesperson for the group, cited reasons for their exit as ostracization within the party, the suspension and expulsion of leaders without fair hearings, and consistent denigration of the party's structure. Aregbesola, who served as the governor of Osun state from 2010 to 2018 under the APC banner, also held the position of minister during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2023. Speculation about forming a coalition to challenge the APC has intensified ahead of the 2025 general election. Notably, in November 2024, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar hosted Peter Obi, a prominent figure in the Labour Party (LP), for a breakfast meeting at his residence in Adamawa state. Furthermore, in January 2025, Nasir el-Rufai, the former governor of Kaduna state, Hamza Al-Mustapha, the ex-aide to the late Sani Abacha, and other politicians convened in Abuja. Kwankwaso, who ran as the presidential candidate for the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the 2023 elections, declared that while the party is not currently engaged in coalition talks, they remain open to the possibility. On Friday, Ajuji Ahmed, the NNPP chairman, confirmed this stance
