The All Progressives Congress (APC) is challenging the validity of the 2024 Local Government elections in Rivers State, taking their case to the Supreme Court after losing at the Court of Appeal.
The Supreme Court is poised to make a pivotal decision on two appeals filed by the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) contesting the legitimacy of the 2024 Local Government elections in Rivers State. The APC is campaigning to invalidate the election results, alleging that the polls were conducted without adhering to the essential legal requirements.
The legal dispute originated when the APC approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, petitioning to halt the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) from administering the elections. Justice Peter Lifu, who presided over the case, ruled in favor of the APC and issued an injunction prohibiting the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing the voters' register to RSIEC. The judge asserted that the prerequisites for conducting a lawful local government election had not been fulfilled. However, the Court of Appeal in Abuja subsequently reversed this ruling. The appellate court determined that the Federal High Court lacked the jurisdiction to handle the case, effectively paving the way for the elections to proceed. The elections witnessed a significant victory for candidates affiliated with the All People's Party (APP), strategically supported by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This verdict by the Court of Appeal was met with dissatisfaction by the APC, leading the party to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court.
