Party sources say winning 35pc of the vote in two years is the 'magic number' for Labour.
Anas Sarwar is aiming to double the number of Labour MSPs in his bid to win the Holyrood election in two years.
Pundits are predicting a close race in which either Sarwar or SNP leader John Swinney will be First Minister. Labour figures told the Record they have crunched the numbers and know the support they need to get a win over the line.Labour only won 22 seats at the last Holyrood election and believe securing 48 next time would shut the SNP out of power.
It is believed Sarwar’s preference is for Labour and the Lib Dems to have more MSPs than the total number of pro-independence members. An analysis of a Norstat opinion poll for The Sunday Times found the pro-UK parties on course for a majority at Holyrood in two years. Elections guru Sir John Curtice said translating Labour’s general election success into seats at Holyrood “may well prove far from straightforward” as voters are more likely to vote SNP in Holyrood elections.
“While Labour cynically look out for themselves, the SNP will continue to work for people across Scotland - doing everything we can to protect Scotland from Labour's cuts and deliver on the priorities of the Scottish people.”
