Part of Caversham Road in Pinetown, Durban was washed away on 12 April 2022 during widespread flooding across KwaZulu-Natal.While it is not yet known how much of the excessive rain and flooding in KwaZulu-Natal can be attributed to human-caused climate change, the extreme rainfall is consistent with a one in 50-year event, according to a climate scientist.

The eastern parts of the country experienced"exceptionally" heavy rainfall, which escalated into flooding events in KwaZulu-Natal. The flooding and resulting damage have claimed the lives of more than 300 people.
