AMAC Launches Emergency Helpline for Women and Girls Abuse Victims

Community News

The Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) has introduced an emergency intervention helpline to assist victims of abuse against women and girls. This new service provides immediate access to security, legal, and healthcare resources, complementing the council's ongoing efforts to combat gender-based violence and encourage community engagement in protecting vulnerable populations.

The Abuja Municipal Area Council ( AMAC) has launched an emergency intervention helpline to improve community response to cases of abuse against women and girls. Unveiled by Loveth Izekor, special adviser on women's affairs to AMAC chairman Christopher Maikalangu, the helpline provides victims with access to security, legal, healthcare, and other support services.

The initiative, part of a broader campaign to mobilize residents across AMAC's 12 wards, aims to break the culture of silence surrounding abuse and empower victims to seek help. The helpline complements the AMAC Women 5-point Voice, a program launched by Maikalangu in September to protect women's rights.

The intervention framework involves collaboration between the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) gender desk, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), healthcare providers, traditional institutions, religious organizations, civil society groups, and media partners. The council urges all residents - including traditional and religious leaders - to actively identify and report abuse, stressing that protection is a shared community responsibility.
