The scheduled arraignment of the immediate past deputy governor of Imo State, Gerald Irona, before a high court in Owerri was stalled on Tuesday.
It was alleged that the ex-deputy governor “did make several utterances to the effect that you will make Imo State ungovernable and immediately afterwards hoodlums launched several attacks on Imo State with intent to intimidate or overaw the Governor of Imo State and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 37 of the Criminal Code, Cap, C38, Law of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo State.
The police further alleged that, on January 15, 2020, the ex-deputy governor “did convert to your own use two Land Cruiser jeep and one Toyota Hilux vehicle valued N493,000,000, property of Imo State Government, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 390 of the Criminal Code, Cap C38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Imo State.”
An Imo State Magistrates’Court had last Thursday ordered that Irona be remanded in the prison custody. He was scheduled to be arraigned before the high court on Tuesday but the arraignment could not take place, as the matter was not listed for hearing in court. According to the legal adviser to the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo State, Kissinger Ikeokwu, who appeared in court for Irona, the case file had yet to be transmitted to the high court’s registry as of Tuesday. The lawyer said, “The arraignment will now take place on Wednesday. We hurriedly filed on Friday and when we got to the court on Tuesday we discovered that the arraignment will no longer take place today. The matter was not listed for hearing in court for the day.
