Object Lessons of a Pandemic: More than solitude, seclusion or stir-craziness, the most difficult thing about life under quarantine is no access to the gym
Object Lessons of a Pandemic is a new series looking at the COVID-19 pandemic through the history and meaning of the objects that surround it — all the strange, ordinary and essential things that the rise of coronavirus has made us think about in new and unexpected ways. From everyday household items to inventions that have become indispensable, these are the objects COVID-19 will be remembered by.
Whenever I leave town on business or travel for more than a couple of days, I invariably lose the all-important rhythm I have established over the course of many weeks and months, and once I’ve lost it, it takes an unbelievable amount of time and dedication to get it back. I don’t quite know the reason, but while I have the resolve to do a one-hour CrossFit class every day at the gym where I’m a member, it’s insurmountably difficult for me to do any kind of serious exercise on my own.
I did a thousand sit-ups on a Saturday afternoon, which I don’t recommend, and over the course of the last three weeks I’ve lost count of how many push-ups, planks, burpees, handstands, lunges and squats I’ve forced myself to half-heartedly bang out. The other day I even went for a run, which I enjoy about as much as doing my taxes.
