Washington winger Alex Ovechkin will be chasing history when he skates onto the ice with his Caps teammates as he tries to score the 801st goal of his career to tie the late Gordie Howe for second in NHL history.
Some probably wouldn’t mind if they had to wait or if it happened and the Senators still found a way to pack up the two points.
On Jan. 10, 2016, he scored his 500th career goal against Ottawa goaltender Andrew Hammond in Washington. Ovechin went bar down on Hammond from the slot and the packed house in the rink went crazy while holding up No. 500 cards handed out by the club. The fans still in the Canadian Tire Centre that night gave Ovechkin a standing ovation as he left the ice.
He has 35 goals and 56 points in 55 career games against Ottawa. The only opposition he’s scored more goals against are the Carolina Hurricanes , Philadelphia Flyers , Islanders and Rangers , along with Pittsburgh and Buffalo .Five of the seven teams are in the Metropolitan Division while the Senators play in the Atlantic with the Sabres. The bottom line is Ovechkin has made life difficult for Ottawa and he’s more than a point-a-game player so this task is tough.
Wins against the Caps and Wings would give the club some confidence and, perhaps, close the gap they’re facing in the NHL standings.
