The Nation Newspaper Alake links strategic communication to good governance in mining
, has linked the success of ongoing reforms in the extractive industry to transparent and ethical public communication, promising to deepen accountability and citizen engagement across the sector.
Alake made this commitment in Abuja, after being conferred with the prestigious Fellowship of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria . The award, presented by a delegation of the Council in the Minister’s office, recognizes his lifetime of contributions to strategic communication, ethical public engagement, and national development.
Speaking during the conferment, the Director-General of ARCON, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, remarked that the honour is a well-deserved tribute to a leader who has effectively utilized strategic communication as a tool for driving structural reforms.
“Since assuming office, Mr. Alake has combined policy innovation with purposeful public engagement to reposition the solid minerals sector as a major pillar of economic diversification,” Dr. Fadolapo said. According to Fadolapo, the Ministry’s deliberate shift toward open dialogue has built immense trust in the government’s ability to clean up the sector.
He noted: “Through transparent communication and sustained stakeholder engagement, the Ministry has deepened investor confidence, built public trust in ongoing reforms, and amplified awareness of key policy initiatives, including the fight against illegal mining, the promotion of mineral beneficiation, value addition, and the attraction of responsible investments. ”Fadolapo also acknowledged the Minister’s distinguished background as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished journalists, stating that before Alake joined public service, “he distinguished himself through decades of impactful journalism and strategic communications, earning widespread respect for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication to nation-building.
” Reacting to the honour, Alake expressed appreciation to ARCON, stating that the award validates the indispensable role of clear communication in achieving good governance and democratic accountability within public administration. For Alake, the fellowship serves as a catalyst to double down on transparency within the extractive industry, particularly as the government works to eliminate corrupt practices and unauthorized exploitation of natural resources.
The Minister noted that the recognition: “…validates the important role of effective communication in public administration and reinforces commitment to openness, accountability, and sustained engagement with citizens, investors, host communities, and other stakeholders in advancing the Renewed Hope agenda for the solid minerals sector. ” By framing communication not merely as publicity, but as an active tool for good governance, the Ministry aims to keep host communities fully informed of their rights while providing international investors with the clarity needed to make long-term commitments to Nigeria’s booming solid minerals market.
