Some aggrieved police officers have threatened to boycott the 2023 general elections if the authorities fail to pay the six months’ arrears of the new salary structure President Muhammadu Buhari approved for the Force. President Buhari in 2021 approved a new salary structure for the Force.

The implementation of the approved police salary structure was supposed to have commenced in January 2022, but it only started in July 2022 with only one month's arrear of payment, with six months outstanding.However, the police authorities claimed that the Nigerian government had not released the funds for the payment.

The officer who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police maintained that if they are mobilised to monitor the elections forcefully, they will not discharge their duties as expected.He insisted that the Nigerian government had released the money for the payment of their arrears but the leadership of the police, starting with the Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, diverted the funds and refused to pay police personnel.
