First Lady of Nigeria calls for sustainable solutions to address growing healthcare funding gap in Africa.
Oluremi Tinubu, the First Lady of Nigeria, has emphasized the need for Africa to develop innovative financing strategies to ensure a robust healthcare system. Speaking at a high-level meeting on domestic health financing organized by Rwandan President Paul Kagame during the 38th African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Tinubu stressed that the continent can no longer rely solely on foreign aid, which she described as unpredictable and unsustainable.
Tinubu argued that without guaranteed access to essential health services for Africans, the continent's efforts to achieve economic growth will be hampered. She urged African leaders to commit to advocating for increased national health budgets, acknowledging the growing funding gap for health on the continent. The First Lady pointed to recent policy changes in the United States, including the freeze on funding by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which supports many health institutions in Africa, as a reason for Africa to seek local and sustainable solutions. She emphasized the need for efficient mobilization and utilization of resources for both short, medium, and long-term impact, stating that a wealthy continent depends on the health of its people. Tinubu called on African governments to allocate at least 15% of their budgets to health, in line with the Abuja Declaration. She also advocated for innovative financing mechanisms, such as expanding health insurance coverage, health endowment funds, and investments from the African diaspora. Transparency and accountability were stressed as crucial elements, ensuring that funds allocated to health are used effectively and efficiently. The meeting, attended by presidents and heads of state from various African countries, donor agencies, and funding partners, aimed to explore global and regional perspectives on domestic health financing in the continent
