A civil rights organisation, ActionAid Nigeria, has called on the Federal Government to enhance its capacity to offset loans before going for more.
The organisation also warned that loans should not be used for recurrent expenditures including paying of salaries and traveling allowances.
The Country Director of AAN, Ene Obi, made the demands in a letter to the Senate President, Ahmad Lawal, for the attention of the Chairman, Senate Committee on Appropriation. The organisation observed that the downward spiral trend of the economy due to the lockdown over coronavirus had compelled the Federal Government to review the 2020 budget. The AAN said, “The Nigerian government should enhance its capacity to offset loans before obtaining more of the same. Furthermore, loans should not be used for recurrent expenditures .
“The budget allocations in the 2020 budget to key sectors should not be reduced further in the ongoing budget review, given that they are already very insignificant, falling below the international benchmarks.”
