The Accord political party has officially distanced itself from Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, stating that he is not its presidential candidate for the 2027 election. The party's leadership clarifies that no presidential candidate was nominated after the sale of expression of interest and nomination forms closed.
According to a statement signed by Barrister Maxwell Mgbuden, the National Chairman, the party did not screen any aspirants nor hold a primary election for the presidential position because no one purchased the required forms within the designated timeframe. The scheduled primary was canceled, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was notified of this cancellation. The party explains that Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim submitted a letter of intent on May 26, 2026, which was after the deadline.
His subsequent payment of ten million naira for the expression of interest form and forty million naira for the nomination form was made after the process had concluded. In line with its principles of transparency and due process, Accord instructed its bank to refund these payments to his account.
The party emphasizes that the event described as a presidential primary where Olawepo-Hashim emerged as a candidate was not organized by the national leadership and is considered invalid, characterizing it as merely a gathering by his supporters. Accord underscores that its nomination process adheres strictly to internal democracy and its published guidelines. While many aspirants purchased forms for other elections such as governorship and legislative seats, no one obtained the presidential forms within the approved period.
The party rejected Olawepo-Hashim's request for automatic candidacy on the grounds that no other aspirants participated, stating that mandatory conditions like timely form submission and screening cannot be waived even in the absence of competition. Eligibility is contingent on full compliance with the guidelines, which Olawepo-Hashim failed to meet due to missing the deadline. The party reaffirms that it has no presidential candidate for the 2027 race under its official processes
