Abia State Government is implementing a new approach to science education, focusing on practical learning. The state will host a competition for science teachers, offering monthly stipends to the best teacher and student. This initiative aims to improve student performance in science subjects and encourage a passion for STEM.
Abia State Government has announced plans to shift from a theory-based approach to a more practical method of teaching science subjects in secondary schools. The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education , Goodluck Ubochi, explained that this change aims to improve student performance in science fields like physics, chemistry, and biology. To encourage this shift, the state will be organizing a science competition for all science teachers in Abia State.
The competition, conducted in collaboration with ASSPPAA-ISBORS Platforms Limited, is designed to identify and reward outstanding science teachers while motivating their students to excel. The best science teacher and student will each receive N50,000 and N20,000 monthly stipends respectively, serving as incentives for their dedication and achievement. Ubochi commended Governor Alex Otti for his commitment to education, highlighting his efforts in ensuring regular teacher salary payments, providing educational facilities, and fostering a positive learning environment. Hope Nwosu, the Director of Science, Technical, and Vocational Education in the ministry, urged the state government to prioritize science teachers in any upcoming mass recruitment. She also advocated for equipping technical schools with adequate science laboratories to support practical learning. Patrick Ochuba, Co-founder of the Science Teachers Championship, emphasized the state's move towards a paradigm shift in science education, prioritizing practical learning over theoretical concepts. He encouraged all school principals to register their schools for the competition, allowing them to participate in this initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of science education in Abia State
