Abia State government has inaugurated a committee to ensure peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders in the state. The committee, which has the mandate to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders, is also mandated to identify and address the root cause of conflict between farmers and herders.
Inaugurating the committee in Umuahia, Governor Alex Otti, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, charged the members of the committee to see themselves as critical agents in the administration's determination of ensuring the sustenance of relative peace in the state. He said that the setting up of the committee was in line with his administration's efforts in ensuring that all who live and do business in the state enjoyed peace.
The committee, which is headed by the Secretary to Abia State Government, Professor Kenneth Kalu, also has the representative from the 13 Brigade Nigerian Army, Ohafia, the Nigeria Police, traditional ruler from the Hausa Northern community, Permanent Secretary, office of the Secretary to the State Government, among others.
