PETALING JAYA: Don’t expect another great run in Japan from world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik this week.
The duo have withdrawn from the tournament after sensationally dumping three-time world champions Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan of Indonesia en route to becoming Malaysia’s first winners in the world meet after 45 years.
“Furthermore, both players are emotionally overwhelmed and they can use the break to recover,” said Rexy.Instead of letting the win get to their head, the world No. 6 have vowed to remain humble, learn from the struggles that shaped them into world champions and want to start from zero again.“We don’t want our performance in the world meet final to be the best that we can produce. We will stay focused after this and take it match by match.
Looking back on their journey to capturing the world title, Aaron revealed that the pain of losing in the semi-finals of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games spurred him and Wooi Yik to go all out in the world meet. “We had targeted gold but only getting bronze in the Games was a failure for us. I think that pain made us stronger and led to this happy moment in the World Championships,” said Aaron.
