The AA has highlighted a worrying lack of concern among drivers
Motorists who disregard the Highway Code have been cautioned about the "potentially lethal" repercussions and the risk of substantial fines. , particularly regarding one crucial Highway Code rule that is frequently overlooked.
It has been revealed by the AA that approximately one in 12 young passengers aged between 14 and 29 neglect to fasten their seatbelts while in a vehicle. Alarmingly, one in 40 drivers also fail to buckle up, leading to serious safety worries. Edmund King, President of the AA, has emphasised the tragedy of each loss and injury caused by road accidents, calling for "significant, bold measures" to achieve zero fatalities on our roads. He stated: "The shocking fact that drivers and passengers alike are willing to travel in a moving car without a seat belt on is horrific. We need to do everything possible to change this behaviour once and for all and ensure everyone clips in before setting off.
"It seems a proportion of people drive carelessly or dangerously as it is clear that many believe they can do what they want as they won't get caught. Our motoring manifesto is clear that we need more cops in cars to help police the roads. Not only will their presence act as a deterrent, but they can stop poor and illegal drivers immediately, potentially preventing further tragedy."
The Department for Transport also backs this with its recent road safety campaign. This initiative, branded Think!, emphasises the importance of wearing seatbelts, targeting the younger male demographic in particular.
