Given the staggering poverty in India’s vast rural countryside and inner cities, there are those who say that such projects are misplaced, and that the resources poured into them are needed more urgently elsewhere. In an interview on the CBS television programme, 60 Minutes, several years ago, a professor in one of the institutes, spoke of how his son, who could not secure admission there, nevertheless was accepted at Cornell on a full scholarship.
