Mobile phones are getting more and more expensive with every single new release, so why are we just letting them go unused? JackGramenz investigates

Australia’s mobile phone industry product steward MobileMuster recently estimated there were around 25 million mobile phones, one for every person in the country, going unused and taking up space.MobileMuster research found one in three Australians have trouble parting with their old phone, even though almost three-quarters of us will never use it again.

An iPhone 8 for instance, which would have cost you $1079 when it launched in 2017, would fetch you around $461 if sold on the second-hand market. Though cases are rare and there are ways to protect yourself when shopping online, there is always a chance your new device could show up different to how it’s described or worse, not show up at all.

The weekend after the iPhone 11 launched, JB Hi-Fi, Optus and Telstra stores across nine Melbourne suburbs were also targeted by a group of thieves.
