The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to join hands with utmost sincerity and commitment to preventing any serious violence in the country, let alone another civil war. Obi gave the admonition on Sunday, in a message to Nigerians to mark the 53rd anniversary of the end of the Nigerian Civil War (Biafran War) which he titled “Nation building and Ordered Society Are Imperative”.

53th Anniversary Of Nigerian Civil War: Peter Obi Says He's 'Fully Committed To One United, Secure Nigeria'Between July 6, 1967, and January 15, 1970, Nigerian forces fought the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state which had declared its independence from Nigeria.

According to Obi, the task of securing and uniting Nigeria should be the only option for citizens, adding that leaders and people of different sections of Nigeria had done well, particularly in the years immediately after the war. The presidential hopeful, who described it as unfair to use the misconduct or position of one person or few persons in an ethnic group to stigmatise the entire group, appealed that since today marks 53 years of the end of the civil war, we should accept that the war has truly ended.

“While we regret the immense losses from the war, pray for the repose of souls of the departed and thank God that it ended, we all must join hands with utmost sincerity and commitment to prevent any serious violence in Nigeria, let alone another civil war! Never again! This task of Securing and Uniting Nigeria should be our only option and we all can agree that the leaders and people of different sections of Nigeria have done admirably well, particularly in the years immediately after the war.

He added, “It is also worth calling a spade a spade. There are youths all over Nigeria who are frustrated because of injustice, poverty, lack of opportunities, unemployment, and apparent exclusion. Such youths could seize upon and use anything issue or tool to express their frustration and anger. "There must be a national programme for those who will accept the carrot approach. For those unwilling to yield to the carrot approach, the stick option will be fully justified and applied. We must put order in our society and where necessary, justice will be tempered with mercy.
