The 165-kilometre Yamuna expressway was India’s longest six-lane highway when it opened in 2012 but about 900 people been killed on the road since, according to authorities, and Indian media have dubbed it the “highway to hell”. “Twenty nine persons have died and 18 others are injured,” said Agra district magistrate N.G. Ravi Kumar at the scene of the accident. “It appears that the driver was drowsy.”

State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered an investigation into the crash and cash compensation of 500,000 rupees for the family of each of the dead.
