2019 AFCON: Super Eagles key midfielder injured ahead of round of 16 clash
Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr, is sweating over the fitness of captain John Obi Mikel ahead of the team’s next game, according to allnigeriasoccer.com.
The former Chelsea star suffered an injury in the Super Eagles 2-0 final group match loss to Madagascar on Sunday. The players returned to the training ground on Monday morning as they began preparations for their round of sixteen.Mikel was substituted after 59 minutes into the loss to the Islanders and it is not certain whether he will be able to play this weekend.
Mikel is not the only injury concern going into the Super Eagles next game as Bursapor defender Abdullahi Shehu is still recovering from a hamstring complaint. The Franco-German coach had suggested at the post-match press conference on Sunday that German-based left-back Jamilu Collins could return to the starting line-up, having missed all the games played by the Super Eagles at the AFCON due to injury.
